Card readers and controllers can be used to control copiers, microfilm equipment, printing (in conjunction with print management software) or multifunction devices that perform both printing and copying simultaneously. Access to to the host device is denied until it is activated by the reader. This can be magnetic stripe, smart card, barcode, or proximity card, depending on the application.

Hardware Solutions
Revalue stations allow users to transfer funds either from currency or an online account to either a stored-value card, or to a seperate account for use within the system in place at the installation. Some revalue devices are also capable of vending the cards themselves.
When the user inserts, swipes, or scans a valid card, the available balance is displayed. The user then inserts currency or, if available, follows instructions for online account transfer. The value is then added to the stored value card or account, the new balance is displayed on the reader, and the transaction is complete. Some of the devices, also offer a receipt printer.
